Autistic Situated Knowledges and the Science Question in Autism: Non-Innocent Metaphors in the Theory of Monotropism
This paper starts from the observation that in a world of pathologising and ableist autism science, identifying as autistic has meant navigating between the necessity of putting words to lived experience and the risk of self-pathologising through problematic metaphors or frameworks. It ponders the “science question in autism” and considers what kinds of situated knowledges autistics can claim. To do so, it examines the use of ‘non-innocent’ metaphors in the theory of Monotropism’s production, dissemination, and reception, and calls for greater accountability and reflexivity in the ways they are used.
